3rd Grade Instrumental Night

Each February, third graders from across the Smithtown Central School District attend the Instrumental Night to experience live performances by their high school peers. Smithtown Central School District music teachers highlight selections across orchestra, band, and other ensembles — giving students an exciting look at what they could be part of starting in 4th grade.

After the event, students receive a packet to submit their top three instrument choices for 4th grade instruction. It is one of the most anticipated moments of the elementary school year, and Friends of Music is proud to be part of this tradition in the Smithtown Central School District.

Gala Concert

Each spring, the Smithtown Scholarship Committee hosts the annual Gala Concert — a celebration of student music in the Smithtown Central School District. Smithtown East and Smithtown West each hold their own separate Gala. Tickets are sold at the door, with those proceeds going to the Smithtown Scholarship Committee.

Friends of Music of Smithtown sells commemorative t-shirts each year to mark the occasion. We do a preorder — information goes out ahead of the Gala so families can place their order in advance, and shirts are ready for pickup the night of the event. T-shirt proceeds go directly to Friends of Music, supporting our programs, scholarships, and teacher mini-grants throughout the year.

Elementary Music Festival

The Smithtown Central School District hosts an annual Elementary Music Festival featuring 5th-grade musicians from all seven elementary schools. Students prepare through a series of in-school and after-school rehearsals, and the season culminates in a massive All-District evening concert featuring over 200 fifth graders — vocalists and instrumentalists celebrating the district's incredible K-12 music programs.

This beloved tradition was just brought back to the Smithtown Central School District, and the response was extraordinary. Friends of Music is proud to support this event by offering commemorative t-shirts as a presale — a keepsake for families and students to mark this milestone. Shirts are available for preorder ahead of the festival and picked up at the event.

Jazz Dinner

The Jazz Dinner is Friends of Music's signature annual fundraiser — an evening of dinner, live jazz, and community coming together to support music education in the Smithtown Central School District. Alumni musicians return to perform alongside current students, and the night is as much a reunion as it is a celebration of everything music means to this community.

And the raffles? Over the top. Prizes are generously donated by local community members and businesses, making every ticket a real shot at something special. Whether you are a current family, a longtime supporter, or an alum coming back to show your support, this is the event of the season. Proceeds go directly to Friends of Music programs, scholarships, and teacher mini-grants.
